Have A Little Faith In The Squirrel
It’s game 6 of the World Series, and our collective backs are against the wall. The Cardinals are down 3-2, and as usual, they’ve left Cardinal nation on the edge of their seats. There’s only one thing we as fans can do: put our faith in the squirrel. The Cardinals are a lot like the squirrel right now. They’re stuck in the middle of a busy intersection, one fearless dart away from getting squashed by oncoming traffic, The Rangers.
While these last games certainly presented challenges for the Cardinals, it’s not over yet. In the MLB’s best-of-seven format, a team has come back to win the World Series after trailing 3-2 on 18 occasions. In the nine previous World Series in which the Cardinals were tied 2-2 through the first four games, they won the championship in seven of them, including four times after losing Game 5. Those odds could have been even better with the rally squirrel.
However, the cute furry rodent isn’t the only thing we’ve got on our side. With game 6 being postponed due to rain, this has opened up new pitching possibilities for La Russa, leaving less room for phone flub errors. This extra day of rest could have an impact on who starts or who is available for relief in game 7. It could mean that Game 5 starter Chris Carpenter is available on three days’ rest.
St. Louis is a resilient city. Whether it’s severe weather, traffic jams or a rapture, we band together for the common good. This year, the Cardinals have been defined by their own resilience and ability to push ahead when things are looking grim. They’ve managed to overcome a 10-game deficit in the wild-card race and were trailing at least once in every postseason series. The Cardinals may be down, but they’re not out. The only thing Cardinal Nation can do at this point is leave things in capable hands… err paws.
